Before You Change Everything for Fall, Start Here

There’s something about the end of summer that makes us want to change our hair.

Maybe it’s the cooler mornings, the promise of a new season, or simply the feeling that we’re ready for something different.

And I get it. Fall is a pretty good excuse for a fresh haircut or a new color.

But before you decide you need to completely reinvent your hair, take a minute to look at what you already have.

Because sometimes your hair doesn’t need a big change.

It just needs a little attention.

Start with the ends

If your hair has spent the summer in the sun, pool, or saltwater, your ends have probably noticed.

They may feel dry, look a little frayed, or tangle more easily than they did a few months ago.

Before adding new products or making a dramatic change, consider a trim.

You may be surprised by how much better your hair feels just from getting rid of those tired ends.

And no, a trim doesn't automatically mean losing all the length you've been working so hard to grow.

Take a look at your color

Summer can be a little unpredictable when it comes to hair color.

The sun can naturally lighten hair, while chlorine and saltwater can affect both the tone and condition of your color.

Before deciding you want to go significantly darker for fall, take a look at what your current color is doing.

Maybe it doesn't need a complete change.

A gloss, toner, or a few strategically placed lowlights might be enough to bring it into the new season.

Sometimes a refresh is all you were really looking for.

Rethink your routine

Your summer routine was probably built around heat, humidity, and spending more time outside.

Fall brings different things to consider.

Cooler, drier air can make hair feel a little less soft, and you may find yourself using more heat to style it as you move away from air-drying.

This is a good time to take another look at your products.

You may need a little more moisture, but that doesn't mean you need to add five new products to your bathroom shelf.

Start with what you already have and make small adjustments from there.

Notice what you've learned about your hair

This might be my favorite part.

Summer has a funny way of showing us what our hair actually likes.

Maybe you discovered that your natural texture looks better when you stop fighting it.

Maybe you found that you don't need as much product as you thought.

Maybe you realized you actually love having a little more brightness around your face.

Pay attention to those things.

Your fall hair doesn't have to be completely different from your summer hair. It can simply be a slightly more refined version of what you've already learned works for you.

Then decide if you still want a change

And if, after all of that, you're still thinking about that new color or haircut you've had saved on your phone for three months?

Go for it.

Sometimes we really do want a change, and there's nothing wrong with that.

The point isn't to talk yourself out of doing something new.

It's just to make sure you're changing your hair because you want to—not because you think the arrival of fall means you're supposed to.

A new season can be a great time for a new look.

But it can also be a great time to appreciate what you already have and make it work a little better.

So before you change everything for fall, start with the basics.

Look at your ends.

Check in with your color.

Adjust your routine.

And then, if you're still craving something new, let's talk about it.

Because sometimes the best fall hair isn't a completely different version of you.

It's just you, refreshed a little for the season ahead.
