Your Hair Is Allowed to Change with the Seasons
There’s something funny about hair.
We expect it to behave exactly the same way all year long, even though almost everything around it is changing.
The temperature changes. The humidity changes. We spend more time outside. We swim, sweat, wear hats, turn the heat on, turn the air conditioning up, and change the way we style our hair without always realizing we’re doing it.
So if your hair feels a little different from one season to the next, that doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.
Sometimes your hair is simply responding to its environment.
And honestly, this is one of the things I love about working with hair. You start to notice those little seasonal changes. The way a client's hair behaves in September may tell you something completely different than it did in June.
Your hair is allowed to change with the seasons. Your routine can, too.
Your summer hair may not need to follow you into fall
Summer has a way of making hair routines feel very different.
You might wash more often because you’re sweating. You may use lighter products because heavier ones feel uncomfortable in the heat. Your hair may spend more time air-drying, pulled back, or left alone because nobody wants to spend 45 minutes with a blow dryer when it’s 95 degrees outside.
Then fall arrives, and suddenly your hair can feel dry, flat, static-y, or just… different.
That doesn’t always mean you need an entirely new routine.
It may simply mean that what worked beautifully in July isn’t quite as helpful in October.
This is where a stylist can be helpful. Sometimes it’s hard to see what’s actually changed when you’re looking at your own hair every day. A fresh set of eyes can help you figure out whether your hair needs more moisture, less product, a different approach to styling, or simply a little attention to the shape and ends.
Sometimes your haircut is part of the problem
By the end of summer, I often think the haircut deserves a little attention.
Not necessarily because you need a completely new style.
Your hair may simply have grown enough to lose some of the shape that made it easy to manage in the first place. Layers can become less noticeable, ends can start feeling rough, and the way your hair naturally falls can change.
That can make you think your products aren't working anymore when the real issue is that your haircut needs a refresh.
A good seasonal appointment doesn't have to mean taking off a lot of length or making a dramatic change. Sometimes a small trim and a little reshaping are enough to make your hair feel like itself again.
And if you do want a bigger change, fall can be a fun time to talk about that too.
Your color doesn't have to make a dramatic seasonal turn
We hear so much about going darker for fall that it can start to feel like a requirement.
It isn't.
Your summer highlights don't automatically need to disappear just because the leaves are changing.
Sometimes your color simply needs a little refining after a season of sun, swimming, and frequent washing. A gloss can refresh faded tones and bring some shine back. A few strategically placed adjustments can soften brightness or add dimension without completely changing what you love about your color.
This is one of my favorite things about seasonal hair changes: they don't have to be dramatic to make a difference.
Sometimes the best update is the one where everyone notices that you look refreshed but can't quite figure out what changed.
Let your hair tell you what it needs
Instead of deciding that your hair needs a complete overhaul every time the weather changes, take a minute to pay attention to what it’s actually doing.
Is it feeling dry?
Is your scalp getting oily faster?
Are your ends tangling more than they used to?
Does your hair seem weighed down by products that worked perfectly a few months ago?
Has your color lost some of the brightness or dimension you loved?
Does your haircut still fall the way you want it to?
Those little clues can tell us a lot.
And if you aren't sure what you're looking at, that's exactly what a salon appointment can be for. You don't have to walk in knowing what you need. Sometimes the most helpful conversation starts with, “My hair just doesn't feel like it's behaving the way it used to.”
From there, we can look at what's changed and decide what actually makes sense.
Maybe you need a trim. Maybe you need a different product. Maybe your color could use a refresh. Maybe your routine is perfectly fine and your hair just needs a little time to adjust.
There’s no prize for making the biggest change.
Your routine should evolve with you
Hair care isn't supposed to be a set of rules you follow forever.
Your hair changes as it grows. Your lifestyle changes. The weather changes. Your color changes. Even the amount of time you want to spend styling your hair can change from season to season.
So let your routine have a little flexibility.
Maybe fall is the time to bring a little more moisture back into your routine. Maybe it's time to refresh your haircut after a busy summer. Maybe you want to soften your color or simply get your shine back.
Or maybe nothing major is needed at all.
Sometimes a conversation with your stylist is enough to figure that out.
Your hair is allowed to change with the seasons.
The goal isn't to make it behave exactly the same way in January as it did in July. It's to notice what it's asking for, make thoughtful adjustments when they're needed, and let your hair evolve along with you.
And sometimes, that's the best reason to sit in your stylist's chair—not because something is wrong, but because it's a good time to check in and see what your hair needs next.
